Learn Chinglish you will

While we were in Vietnam, we were consistently amazed by the quality of English on menus, hotel signs and travel brochures.  They were obviously intended for English speaking tourists but sometimes we had trouble understanding them!  (Think those instructions you get with flat packed furniture!)

We believed there could be a good job going for someone to freelance their translation/spellchecking skills to all those tourist places.

In China, we were amazed that even the government doesn’t pay for a proper translater – unless of course they’ve got the guy who played Yoda in Star Wars?

The first evidence of this was the road signs on the motorway.

 ”Don’t Drive Tiredly”

Then we found a series of community announcement posters around Guilin, which we particularly enjoyed, including:-

“Don’t Drive the Drunkenly.  The tears falling down the families will be”.

This one is our favourite:-

Very funny and I’m sure you will come across many more odd translations before the trip is over. Have just caught up with the last three weeks news (I don’t seem to want to look at the computer while we are in France!) Can’t believe you have been away three months already. So pleased all is going to plan and you are all enjoying it. All the meticulous planning and some sort of routine is serving you well. Really think you must write a book when it is all over- at least all your friends and family will want to read it!! So looking forward to seeing you all in September. Congratulations on your first three months and our love to you all —Grandma Nessie and Granddad Peter XXX
